So here's the thing.
I'm probably one of the few cake decorators who has this opinion: Rice Krispie treats suck. Not only in their pointless over-sweet taste but their actual use on a cake. When did the Rice Krispie treat start to appear as part of cake decoration? Never in my day, growing up you had delicious sponge cake - all cake.
As you can probably guess, this is a recent phenomenon which I found it necessary to delve into for a sandcastle I needed to make to go on top of a beach-themed wedding cake.
As is my default state, I got in a mess right from the start.
The consistency of this treat is like crazy glue and, believe me, it gets everywhere. It is hard to handle, hard to manipulate and you just end up with sticky individual Rice Krispies stuck to your fingers, apron, elbows, hair. Everywhere. And why you may ask yourself?
Because according to popular thought, it's easier than carving cake. No it is bloody not!
So my brief foray was that. Brief. From now on it will be cake, cake, cake all the way and I'll be a far happier cake decorator for it.
What do you think? Do customers mind the invasion of Rice Krispie treat models or shall we go back to how it was? Leave your thoughts ....
