Krispies, Schmispies ....

So here's the thing.
I'm probably one of the few cake decorators who has this opinion: Rice Krispie treats suck. Not only in their pointless over-sweet taste but their actual use on a cake. When did the Rice Krispie treat start to appear as part of cake decoration? Never in my day, growing up you had delicious sponge cake - all cake.
As you can probably guess, this is a recent phenomenon which I found it necessary to delve into for a sandcastle I needed to make to go on top of a beach-themed wedding cake.
As is my default state, I got in a mess right from the start.
The consistency of this treat is like crazy glue and, believe me, it gets everywhere. It is hard to handle, hard to manipulate and you just end up with sticky individual Rice Krispies stuck to your fingers, apron, elbows, hair. Everywhere. And why you may ask yourself?
Because according to popular thought, it's easier than carving cake. No it is bloody not!
So my brief foray was that. Brief. From now on it will be cake, cake, cake all the way and I'll be a far happier cake decorator for it.
What do you think? Do customers mind the invasion of Rice Krispie treat models or shall we go back to how it was? Leave your thoughts ....

Game for a laugh

Well, it was another busy week at TLC with lots of work behind the scenes for a very special beach-themed wedding cake for my niece.
It’s always the family ones which have you the most stressed; and usually the ones which are the hardest to perfect. Still, all good so far with the pretty Caribbean blue shell decorations, pleased and excited - can’t wait for her to see it next month.
TLC have also being doing their bit for Red Nose Day and we managed to raise £80 for Comic Relief with great personal thanks to Depuy International and, in particular, Kerry Seymour. Also thanks to QHotels, the team at The Queens Hotel in Leeds and other generous customers. I thank you all for your support.
This week it’s 'Sweet 16' birthday cakes and more corporate cupcakes for The Queens, Leeds.
I’ll also be making lots more bunny rabbits for Easter cupcakes and purchasing about a million Mini Eggs (most of which I’m hoping will end up on the cupcakes and not in my mouth!)

Busy week in the kitchen ...

Well, that’s been a pretty hectic week. The launch of TLC website has gone down a storm with plenty of welcome new likers.
There were lush chocolate corporate cupcakes for Depuy International and their Fostering Female Talent campaign as well as more thoughts towards a few Easter cupcake ideas and Mother’s Day gifts which are very popular each year - if you can’t tell your mum you love her with cake then how can you?
On a personal note, my grand achievement this week was sewing badges (neatish) onto my son’s Beavers jumper. If you know me, you’d know what an accomplishment that is.
I had no choice though with the constant nagging from my boy to ‘stop doing that cake stuff’ and do 'sew' ! Who could resist ...
Next week I’ll be taking a few days off, but then be straight back in to designing a baptism cake and more corporate cupcakes for The Queens Hotel in Leeds.
Oh and there's always Comic Relief too ... have fun!
